Fun Home @ Cornish Playhouse (Seattle Center – Mercer St.)
Fueled by the liberation of truth-seeking and discovery, Fun Home is wildly personal while achieving something universal: a desire for connection and loving witness of who we truly are. Telling a larger story about love, authenticity, and being brave enough to face the pain that comes with holding complex stories; this production shows us that one of the great costs of conformity is that it keeps us from really being with the people we love.
Fun Home began as a graphic memoir by the lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel chronicling her complex relationship with her closeted gay father. Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori adapted the graphic novel into an exceptional non-linear musical that balances the darkness of Bruce Bechdel’s death with the light of Alison’s self-discovery as a child, college student and creatively stalled adult.
