Openings & Short Runs
Showtunes: 9 to 5 @ Erickson Theatre
Dolly Parton’s musical of office revenge, in concert
Runs 4/8-16. In Seattle (Capitol Hill).
Most big musicals feature lavish sets, long runs, and ages of rehearsal time. Showtunes takes a much different approach, in what might be called the “efficiency musical”: talented, experienced performers, on book, without sets, doing short runs of often lesser-known works. It’s a rawness that puts it all on the performers and musicians to tell the story, without any other visual flair to rely on.
Their latest production, Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, features Be Russell, Sarah Russell and Naomi Morgan in the leading roles, rising up against their sexist employer. It opens tonight and runs for four performances over two weekends.
